Born in Scotland, he moved to New Zealand in 1876. He was taught by his father John Gibb, as well as training at the National Gallery School in Melbourne from 1877-1879. Known as a Canterbury artist he painted landscapes and portraits; politician Sir Julius Vogel was one of his subjects.
